Studying abroad is such a special, life-changing experience. These apps will make your life abroad easier by helping you learn the language, navigate the city, and stay connected with your family back home. Here are some apps you should download if you are studying abroad:

1. Duolingo

Duolingo is a fun (and actually kind of addicting) app that will help you learn a new language through a series of different games. As you keep playing the games, you learn more and the games get harder. If you play every day, you very will quickly pick up the language. Duolingo has other apps that supplement your language learning (for example, an app that creates vocabulary word flashcards was very helpful for me when I was learning French). If you want to learn your country’s language in a fun, quick, simple way, you should definitely download Duolingo.

2. Rome2Rio

While you are away, chances are good that you will take trips to new places. Especially if you are in Europe, it’s easy to travel across countries and see more places in your short time studying abroad. But it can be hard to learn how to get to your destination if you’re still not used to your new country yet. The app Rome2Rio will tell you how to get from any point A to any point B. You can search through planes, trains, cars, or even ferry routes to help you get to your weekend trip destination. If you and your friends and planning a weekend getaway while you are abroad, definitely download Rome2Rio to help you guys arrive at your vacation spot.

3. Triposo

On a similar note, Triposo is another great app to have if you’re going on a trip while studying abroad, or even while you are still getting to know your new city. When you travel to a new city without a tour guide or a local friend, it might be hard to know where to eat and what to do. Triposo solves this problem by being a virtual tour guide! It will tell you where to shop, eat, and drink, and what you can do in many cities around the world. Triposo will help you get to know your new city, and any new city you might encounter during your time abroad.

4. WhatsApp

Staying connected is very important when you are away from home. But when you are in a different country, you might not be able to text using your phone’s data. Instead of texting on your cellular network, you can use a free messenger app that’s not connected to cellular data, like WhatsApp, to communicate with your family and friends. Because it’s WiFi-based, you can use it anywhere in the world, as long as there is WiFi! All in all, WhatsApp is a great way to keep in contact with your family and friends when you are in other country and can’t rely on your cellular network.

5. Oanda Currency Converter

When you are traveling, the currency will likely not be the US dollar. You will have to get used to exchanging your money to the currency in your country. Oanda Currency Converter will make it easy for you to see how much your currency is worth. It has a live rate of exchange for many currencies, and historical ones, too. It will also allow you to send money abroad (your parents might find that useful!). Oanda Currency Converter is a quick, easy way to find out how much your money is worth in your new country.

6. Converter Plus

In the United States, we are used to the English measurement system that uses units such as feet, pounds, and cups. However, the rest of the world uses the Metric measurement system that uses units such as meters, grams, and liters. These are the common measurements you will see when you study abroad. It might be hard to understand this different system! Converter Plus is an app that will convert between the measurement systems for you. With this app, you will understand your international friends when they tell you how far a place is or how much something weighs using their measurement system.

7. WiFi Finder

WiFi is very important when you are abroad because you might not be able to use your cellular data. Unfortunately, WiFi can sometimes be hard to find when you are traveling. (It is not like the United States, where you can find free WiFi almost anywhere you go.) But with the app WiFi Finder, you will know exactly where the closest WiFi hotspot is. WiFi Finder uses your GPS to help you find WiFi hotspots near you. It will be a big help when you’re in a new city and you need to access the Internet.

If you are studying abroad, these apps will help you become more comfortable in your new lifestyle. Enjoy your trip!
